Today’s nice find is from a website I hadn’t come across before – the HathiTrust digital library. HathiTrust is “a partnership of academic & research institutions, offering a collection of millions of titles digitized from libraries around the world”.
My find is ‘Outlines of a Gentle Life: A biography of Ellen P Shaw’ (1887) written by her sister, Maria VG HAVERGAL (both were the older sisters of poet and hymn writer Frances Ridley HAVERGAL).
Ellen Prestage HAVERGAL (1823-86) married mill owner Giles SHAW of Celbridge, Co Kildare on 6 Feb 1856. They lived at Celbridge Lodge, and employed my gg-grandfather, William RICHARDSON Sr as gardener for many years. It was at Celbridge Lodge that he met my gg-grandmother, Mary HOGAN, who was a house and parlour maid. According to a surviving reference, she was in service for six years before getting married in 1859 – a union which the Shaws considered “most suitable and respectable”!
